We have known Sallyann and Berni for a long time now, having worked with them building and maintaining their Gym photos website, and becoming good friends with them both in the intervening years.
We know how popular they both were on the gym circuit, Berni is a fantastic photographer and Sallyann is brilliant at organising everything. We were therefore as sad as everyone else, when, last year, during the lockdown respite and sharing a cuppa and a piece of Berni’s delicious home-made cake (all socially distanced of course) they told us that they were going to give up the business and concentrate on enjoying their home, garden, family and friends.
Whilst this decision was forced somewhat by the COVID pandemic, it was clear that they were both so relaxed and happy that it was the right time to have made their choice. They had, with heavy hearts, sold their beloved mobile home Harvey and were winding down. At that point we decided that we owed it to them to create a little memory of them and their business for everyone to enjoy.
We hope that you do!

In years gone by Berni happened to work for Avon Rubber, as it was then. His department was donated some tickets to a car race meeting. When the others all had plans at such short notice, he went himself. He took a few touristy snaps, and showed them to his manager. A long story short, those few pictures led him to take promotional shots towards an Avon Tyres Calendar and he ended up as the circuit photographer at Castle Coombe race track, not only attending all the race meetings, but many other events as well.
Meanwhile, one of his main hobbies was motor cross. He rode most weekends at meetings during the season, until as the result of a bad accident, a change of course was needed. He sold his bike and bought some decent camera equipment. Knowing the riders and their followers as he did, he started out selling/giving away the pictures he took.
As the seasons moved on, he became good at photographing ‘moving targets’. When digital equipment became the norm, he updated and stayed with it, enjoying the camaraderie on the circuits.
Knowing his days in the Avon were numbered, he retrained as a complimentary therapist. With at least five therapies at his fingertips, he ended up specialising in sports and remedial therapy and working mainly with disabled people. To subsidise being a therapist/doing the training, he found himself managing a halfway house for people with learning difficulties, whilst also teaching First Aid and Aromatherapy Massage.
During this challenging time in his life he met Sallyann. Not only was she on the introduction to aromatherapy course, but was also at a different branch of the Avon. He was introduced to her family at her daughter’s wedding. Talk about a baptism of fire! As you all probably know he is a very personable fellow and rose to the challenge admirably, even if he did have a camera to hide behind!
He had also become friends with the mother of an elite gymnast who soon became a regular client. When the English Championships were held at the local gym she asked if he could take some ‘proper’ photos of her in action. This he did. Soon other mums became interested. By the end of the day the gym club itself were thinking maybe this could be a fund-raiser for them. Most gyms are charities. They are often run on a shoe-string budget with volunteering and a lot of fund-raising!
As you can imagine, Berni carried this out admirably. Soon his name got out there and he had a following, leading him to have requests to travel all over Britain, attending many gyms and competitions, taking action photographs of all ages, groups and abilities.

“… Gymnastics is perhaps one of the most comprehensive ‘lifestyle exercise programs’ available to children, blending strength, flexibility, speed, balance, coordination, power and discipline … It gives the athlete flexibility, grace, balance and amazing power. However, this is a sport which also benefits the mind — teaching perseverance, attention to detail, focus, poise and confidence.” Google

Above all, gymnastics is a sport that includes physical exercises requiring balance, strength, flexibility, agility, coordination, and endurance. The movements involved in gymnastics contribute to the development of the arms, legs, shoulders, back, chest, and abdominal muscle groups. Having to balance school, homework, practice and fitness around social and family life – teaches the young person to make the most of every moment, which can be a very useful skill to have in later life.

Eventually gymnastics would take over his life and in 2002 he and Sallyann became full time in BC Gymnastic Photography, travelling the country on the competition circuit. They even gave up their house for a while and took to road in a 40ft American RV called Harvey. Berni had a very good reputation for catching the moves at the most amazing moments and was never short of work. He/they loved the environment and went on way past retiring age, even if their social and hobby time was then in very short supply.
They filled in the gaps by joining a gym for a week (or even two in the bigger ones) taking pictures of all the classes from pre-school to veteran, getting to know the coaches and the gymnasts in a real way. They also saw first hand all the hard work and dedication that goes on behind the scenes.

This is where we must leave Berni and Sallyann, as they take the next exciting steps on their journey. We wish them every happiness for their future, which we know will be full of fun and laughter. As a further testament to the fact that they have definitely made the right decision, take a look at how beautiful their garden looked at the end of last summer in comparison to a few years ago!
